Snail Farming in Athens, Georgia

Site 3 was the most suitable site for the development of a snail farm as found in Geoplanner 1

SCENARIO A - DEVELOPING SITE 3

SCENARIO B - DEVELOPING SITE 2

Site 2 was the second most suitable site for the development of a snail farm as found in Geoplanner 1

CONCLUSION: Scenario A (Site 3) is the better choice for snail farm development based on this exercise

COMPARISONS & CONCLUSIONS

DESIGN GOAL

The goal of the following two scenarios for the snail farm site designs was to place the location of the snail farm in the most suitable location, to provide enjoyable recreational areas and sufficient parking, and to implement areas of stormwater management to mitigate pollution from each of the sites, all while maintaining  as much open conservation space as possible on each site.

Land Use Comparison

In Scenario A with Site 3, the largest land use is Open Space Conservation, which composes 58.5% of the site, followed by Agricultural Ranch (snail farm) which is 17.7 % of the site area.

In Scenario B with Site 2, the largest land use is also Open Space Conservation, which composes 47.04% of the site, followed again by Agricultural Ranch (snail farm) which is 20.39% of the site.

The percent values for the other land uses for both Scenario A and Scenario B are all relatively close to each other, with insignificant differences.

Scenario A (Site 3) has more than 10% more

conservation space than Scenario B.  Since maximize the amount of conserved land area was the main objective of these designs, this makes Scenario A (site 3) a better design in terms of maximize the conservation space,

Suitability Comparison

Based on the Suitability levels data, Scenario A (Site 3) is more suitable for the development of a snail farm than Scenario B (Site 2).

Scenario A, Site 3, has its highest suitability percent in 4 Medium of 35.2% followed closely by 5 Medium with 32.7%.  It also has a high level suitability percent of 7 High of 6.70%.

Scenario B, Site 2, has its highest suitability percent in 5 Medium of 68.4% followed by 4 Medium with 16.2% and 6 Medium with 15.1%.  It has no percentages in the High suitability levels.

While Scenario B's highest suitability percentage is in 5 Medium, a higher suitability level than the greatest percentage in Scenario A which is in 4 Medium, it lacks any percent values in the High Suitability range, while Scenario A does not.  Scenario A overall has higher suitability levels than Scenario B, again making it the better choice for snail farm development.
